Simplified English Using Just 850 Words

Basic English is a controlled language or simplified subset of regular English that aids in teaching English as second language.

Presented in Ogden’s book Basic English: A General Introduction with Rules and Grammar (1930), it consists of just 850 words that can be used to say almost everything.

Words are combined using his special rules of grammar which allows the communication of most if not all concepts and things a person might want to say on a daily basis.

MAIN RULES
1. You can form plurals by appending an “s” on the end of a word.

2. When the special rules of normal English require using “es” or “ies” then continue to use them.

3. Adjectives can be modified using “er” and “est”.

4. Operators (verbs) can be changed adding “ing” and “ed”.

5. Form adverbs from qualifiers by adding “ly”.

6. Talk about amounts with “more” and “most”.

7. Use and know “er” and “est”.

8. Adjectives become negative with “un”

9. Questions can be formed using opposite word order and with “do”.

10. Operators and pronouns inflect as in normal English.

11. You can make new words by combining others, such as milk and man “milkman” or sun and down “sundown”.

12. All measures, numbers, money, days, months, years, clock time and international words are in normal English forms.

13. Technical expressions and other terms needed are used in there local form.
